Why Google AI Overviews name your competitor and not you
When someone in your city searches "emergency plumber near me", Google increasingly answers with an AI summary before the map. Three or four businesses get named. If yours isn't one of them, it's rarely random.
What Google's AI reads
For local services, the AI answer is assembled from what Google already knows: your Business Profile (categories, services, service area, hours, description), your reviews (how many, how recent, what they mention), and your website (whether it answers the question the customer asked). Google says no special markup is needed for AI features — the same signals that drive the map pack drive the AI answer.
The usual reasons a business is missing
| Reason | How it shows up |
|---|---|
| Thin Business Profile | One category, few services listed, no service area, short description |
| Stale or inconsistent details | Different phone or hours on Yelp, your site and your profile — AI picks one and it's often wrong |
| Few recent reviews | Dozens of reviews, but two in the last 90 days, none mentioning the service |
| No page that answers the question | Homepage lists "services"; nothing answers "AC not cooling, same-day repair in [city]" |
| Site can't be crawled | A noindex tag or robots rule left over from a redesign |
What to check first
Not the website. Start with the profile and the listings, because that's where the AI reads your details from and where errors originate. A report that tells you which listing the wrong phone number came from saves you fixing six places when one was the problem.
